The Highlands Recreation District operates under the Community Services District law pursuant to the government code 61000 et seq, for the purpose of providing recreational services within the District. Services are provided under the leadership and direction of an elected Board of Directors. The Highlands Recreation District maintains facilities including the Recreation Center, Early Education Center, After School Center, Tennis Courts, Pool and Playgrounds in addition to a variety of programs, services, and annual special events.

Job Summary
The Swim Coach is pivotal in building and leading a dynamic swim team that fosters growth, teamwork, and enjoyment. The Swim Coach oversees all facets of coaching the age group and pre-competitive swimming team, including recruitment, administration, instruction, and supervision of swimmers across all ages and skill levels within the program. The Swim Coach will instruct the fundamentals of swimmer development, training program design, and implementation for progression of swim stroke skills, to competitive swimming, and stroke progression during training sessions. This position reports to the Aquatics Supervisor and receives direct supervision and direction from the Aquatic Coordinator.
Essential Functions and Tasks
· Swim Team Development & Coaching:
o Provide key concepts for swimming coaching, including how to communicate with swimmers, give feedback, and create a positive training atmosphere.
o Assess swimmer development to understand their abilities, set achievable goals, and customize training programs for their individual needs, focusing on growth and long-term athlete development.
o Teach the swimming techniques for all four competitive strokes, starts, and turns. Learn how to effectively teach these skills to swimmers with different skill levels.
o Create coaching strategies for physical conditioning, injury prevention, mental strength, and race preparation to prepare swimmers for competition.
o Design and implement structured training programs that are engaging. Understand training cycles and manage workloads to improve swimmer performance.
o Plan and run structured training for both individual swimmers and teams. Provide instruction and feedback on swimming techniques, strokes, breathing patterns, starts, turns, and race strategies during practices, clinics, meets, and other events.
o Motivate and encourage swimmers to reach their potential and foster excellent sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth.
· Team Leadership & Management:
o Lead by example while adhering to HRD policies and being a role model both on and off the pool deck by setting expectations and team policies and conduct behavior in a moral & ethical manner to set a good example for swimmers to follow.
o Organize team tryouts, assess each swimmer's abilities, and provide them with appropriate instruction, areas for improvement, and competitive event assignments.
o Maintain equipment. Report any damage to the Aquatic Supervisor or the Aquatic Coordinator.
· Meet & Competition Coordination:
o Attend all swim meets, practices, and league meetings and interact with other coaches, parents of swimmers, and league officials to coordinate full participation at swim meets and league activities.
o Understand and teach competitive swimming rules, regulations, policies, and procedures for program success.
o Plan and manage the meet events in collaboration with swimmers, ensure swimmer entries, event assignments, and lineups, proper warm-ups, and pre-competition strategies.
· Communication & Administration:
o Assist the Aquatic Supervisor with overseeing and managing registration fees for all athletes and programs.
o Track progress and results to monitor performance and adjust training plans. Maintain records as required (i.e., attendance, progress reports, meet results, team records, qualifying times, etc.) and post on team HDAC Website and Database.
o Build effective, authentic relationships and communication with swimmers and their parents regarding schedules, expectations, and updates.
o Update the team handbook on an annual basis.
· Safety & Compliance:
o Follow all HRD policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures of swimmers during practices and competitions, ensure a safe swimming environment by enforcing pool rules and safety protocols, and respond to emergencies appropriately and efficiently.
o Complete incident and injury reports, suspicious or inappropriate behaviors, and policy violations, as necessary.
o Adheres to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising youth.
o Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s)
· Ability to demonstrate a developmental teaching philosophy, judgment, reliability, availability, decision-making, and communication with swimmers and family members.
· Ability to work effectively with staff and swimmers at all levels, displaying a positive attitude, demonstrating confidence, motivation, and encouragement.
· Ability to build and maintain long-term customer relationships, build trust, respect, maintain composure and objectivity under pressure.
· Skills to be effective in listening to, understanding, and clarifying the concerns and issues raised by members, guests, and team members.
· Knowledge of the American Swimming Coaches Association Code of Ethics, the USA Swimming Code of Conduct, and all SafeSport, USA Swimming, and team policies regarding athlete safety and protection with swimmers and families.
· Ability to meet and perform the physical requirements and work effectively in an environment typical of this position.
· Ability to project voice and get young swimmers' attention and cooperation.
· Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.
· Ability to grow, develop, and demonstrate instructional swimming techniques.
· Knowledge and understanding of organizational policies, procedures, and systems for safety, operations, and management of the HRD EAP.
Required Qualifications
· High School degree.
· 4+ years of competitive swimming experience.
· USA Swimming Coaching certification within 30 days of hire.
· American Red Cross CPR and AED for the Professional Rescuer and First-Aid certification within 30 days of hire.
· American Red Cross Lifeguard certification within 1 year of hire.
· American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification within 1 year of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
· College Degree
· USA Swim Team Coaching experience and/or ASCA Swimming background.
· Proficient in TeamUnify/GoMotion, Hy-Tek Meet/Team Manager, and general computer literacy.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
The position works in both indoor and outdoor environments and is subject to severe hot, cold, and inclement weather. The physical demands of this position are described below.
· Sitting, walking, swimming, submersion under water, twisting, bending, climbing, pulling, pushing, squatting, crawling, kneeling, balancing, reaching, and coordination (eye, hand, foot).
· Fall (slip, trip) Conditions that result in falls (impacts) from height or traditional walking and playing surfaces.
· Heat illness/temperature extremes that result in heat stress, exhaustion, or metabolic slowdown such as hypothermia.
· Chemical exposure – absorption through the skin, inhalation, or through the bloodstream that may cause illness, disease, or death.
· Lifting and carrying, often 10-25lbs, frequently 26-50lbs, occasionally 50-150 lbs.
· Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
Minimum Hourly or Salary: $25.00 - Maximum Hourly Salary: $35.00
· This position is non-exempt from the provisions of Section 1 of the California Industrial Welfare Commission Orders.
· In general, the position works on a schedule based on business needs and may require early morning, evening, and weekend work.
· May work up to, but not in excess of 29 hours per week (among all concurrent positions).

Required Staff Training
Prior and during hiring process, all employees are required to complete the following compliance online training sessions through Paylocity. Employees will be enrolled in the training soon after their appointment is processed and will be notified via email from the HR department.

· Injury and Illness Prevention Program - one-time course.
· Discrimination and Harassment – required every two years.
· Mandated reporter training certificate.
Background Check and Fingerprinting
Employees are required to undergo and complete a successful background check that includes verification of employment and education, as well as a check of criminal records for employment. Candidates for positions where the employee will come in regular contact with minors will be required to be fingerprinted. This policy includes emergency hires and may also be applicable to volunteers depending on the work they will be doing.
In some cases, a background check will include a Department of Motor Vehicles check, as well as a check of licenses and certificates when applicable.
